Last week Wed, I noticed Jodee crankier than usual. If you would even move her from one position to another, she would cry and cry. That night, before we went to sleep around 11, I felt her head and she was really warm, but didn't think too much about it. Thursday morning, around 3 when Jodee woke up to feed, she felt hotter yet. I took her temperature and it read around 38.3 which is high. I called the heath nurse hotline and they recommended I go to see a Dr. within the hour, but I figured Jodee was still under midwife care I would call the midwife on call. She told me to wait it out until morning and see how Jodee was doing, and if she still had a fever or it was over 38.5, to go see my family Dr. So, off to sleep we went. Around 8am, Jodee and Sidney were in my bed and I was on the phone with my mom. Jodee's temperature was lower, but not low enough. I moved Jodee's position and my mom said that was not a good cry and I really should take her in. So, I got my butt out of bed ASAP, called Tracey to take Sidney as I was just going to go to a walk-in clinic as my Dr's office didn't answer the phone until 9:30 and I didn't feel like waiting for them. So, at the walk-in clinic, Jodee's temperature read 38.5. The Dr. their didn't waste any time by calling a petiatrician and sending me off to the ER. So, I'm all crying b/c I didn't expect it or want to do it and I'm all on my own as Byron was off to the USA helping a friend move. So, in the ER I got a room to myself as Chilliwack hospital renovated the ER and they have a pediatric room. I met a Dr. Playdell-Pierce, a petiatrician and he was fantastic! They decided to do some bloodwork which they had to put an IV in, so it took 4 pokes to finally get the IV in, which was not a nice process as Jodee was just screaming and I was just bawling. That ended up coming up with nothing of what could explain what was wrong, then they had a special pad in her diaper that absorbed pee so that they could check her urine for a bladder infection which turned up negative, and then that evening the doctor came and said he wanted to do a Lumbar, which is a spinal tap. I bawled when he told me that, so I called Byron to come to the hospital (he was home with Sidney at this point) for support. So, I ended up staying in the room for it while Byron and Sidney hung out in the hall that the spinal happened. I cried even before they touched her; it took the 2nd poke to get spinal fluid out. She only cried when they were poking her, but during the procedure, she was just limp, tired from all the crying that day? Yeah, never want to have to go through that again though! The results came up negative for anything a few hours later, so the Dr. decided that he wanted to treat her with antibiotics anyways just to make sure that if there was an infection he was treating it, but if it was a virus, she would just get better on her own! So I had to stay until the first treatment was done, then I headed home around 1:45am (I had been there since 10am). I had to go back Friday night at 9pm, then Saturday night at 6pm for more IV treatments. I met with the Dr. the Saturday night and he thinks her problem was just a virus, so we're thankfull it wasn't anything else! We got the IV taken out that night which was nice. It's no fun seeing your little, innocent baby getting poked and prodded! If any of you don't know this, but babies under 3 months should not be getting a fever unless there's something causing it. It's something they take very seriously if the Dr's come across a baby with a fever. If their fever is over 38.5 you have to watch for seizures which is something I PRAY I'll never have to deal with. We thank God that our Jodee is doing well today and has no ill effects from what she went through. We thank you for your prayers while we were going through this!
DON'T LOOK BELOW IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE A PICTURE OF JODEE'S HAND WITH AN IV IN IT!!!!!!!!!
First I'll post a picture taken of me and Jodee on the Saturday night (both pix taken that night) hanging out in the ER chair with her getting her treatment done.
